Conversation matters

Counseling, Coaching and Pastoral Care

WHAT I DO

Sometimes it seems hard to find a listening ear. We wonder who still cares. Many people still do, and yet so many people lack a place to be engaged, to sort, to examine closely what is inside themselves and what their lives consist of. I have made an effort to care as a lifetime’s work and calling.

Caring conversations can be extremely simple and straightforward. Others are knotty and complex. In this day and age, it isn’t terribly easy or simple sometimes to talk with someone, to listen, to absorb, to hear pieces and parts and gain from the shape and twists in the picture of someone else’s life.

A PLACE TO LAND

Some understandings are interpersonal, some psychological, but they all have to do with who we are as created, wondrous and distorted, emotional and thoughtful beings, who have fallen from grace and need redemption and restoration. We all need shelter and a haven.

COMMITTED ENGAGEMENT

I listen to learn and to gain understanding. I work to express the love of God, and to help people where they are. I have been schooled in the ways and words of Jesus, and have attempted to minister in His name and by His grace for nearly thirty years. But I hope my experience and commitment are useful to non-Christians as well. A good portion of the people that I work with are not Christians. A great deal of my training has been in secular situations: community clinics, homeless shelters, and local hospitals.

What I have been doing is a mix of what’s commonly called pastoral care, as well as spiritual direction, incorporating a good measure of psychotherapy.

I also have training as a leadership and life coach, assisting people sort through complex personal and organizational puzzles.

I work with hearts and minds to heal, to grow, to be closer to whole, to serve, to shepherd and contribute, and to hear God’s voice if folks are open to it.

basic Parts

In this practice, I understand the work as a ministry and service to all people, so I want it to be accessible to as many people as possible. I work by the hour on a sliding scale, based on your means and need, but usually do not limit our time strictly by the clock. I have a basic rate that is based on ability to pay. I will work with you to help you where you are and with what you have,

I do a good amount of work by phone, Skype, but prefer in person. I can meet in a variety of locations, depending on the nature of our conversation and your need for privacy. I work with men, mostly, and couples, and am available to work with women as well, but usually only by phone or by Skype. I do not accept any insurance.

A Little About ME

I have been a Presbyterian pastor for 22 years. Through ministry, counseling, teaching, and community partnerships I have found great challenge and satisfaction in the simple interpersonal work done in conversations and mutual discernment of life situations and struggles, shepherding and walking alongside all sorts of people, towards a more gracious state of life.

MY TRAINING

My undergraduate research was on artistic expression and psychopathology from Davidson College. My masters was in Pastoral Care and Counseling, from Vanderbilt Divinity School. I have recently done advanced work at Westminster Seminary in Biblical Counseling.

I have also completed the coursework for professional coaching through the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita. I am an ordained pastor (teaching elder) in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, having been a pastor since 1994.
